Mad cow disease, also known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), is caused by prions. Prions are infectious agents composed entirely of protein material that has folded into an abnormal shape. These misfolded proteins induce normal versions of the same protein in the host's brain to also fold incorrectly, leading to a chain reaction that results in brain damage and eventually death.
